Today in Class

Class started today with a Do Now on the results of multiplying negative and positive numbers.

Students learned through this activity that when you multiply (and divide) and there are an odd number of negative numbers the answer always negative (see letters g,h,l,o).  On the other hand, when there are an even number of negative numbers the answer is always positive (see letters i,k,m,n).  Lastly, when zero is multiplied by a negative number the answer is neither positive or negative because zero is neither positive of negative.

We then discussed WHY negative and positive answers happen when multiplying and dividing.  More specifically I asked why does a negative times and negative equal a positive.  As a class we looked at these representations.

Students were able to see the concept of opposite when working with negative signs and applied it to the number lines.

The last part of class was spent in groups working on the following problem.

This created some outstanding discussion about the placement of the negative sign in a fraction.  Does it affect the value?  The answer is no. You will see in the image below a few groups coming together to discuss what they think.
